Deadly Tornado Hits Joplin, MO.

A very large tornado went over Joplin, MO on Sunday night; knocking out a hospital and killing people across town. The towns people were left without power for many hours after the devastating storm. 30 people were killed, 11 bodies from just one location. There was a lot of panic, but many people stepped up to help others. Joplin’s was by far the worst damage on a day of brutal storms in the Midwest.

I feel bad for the people in Joplin as well as the other people in the Midwest whose lives were affected by these natural disasters. I feel as though the people affected will come together and work towards rebuilding what was lost, and a lot of good will come out of this in the end.

Frequent earthquakes, heavy rains and hurricanes. They make the ground muddy, which can trigger a mudslide.
What are some human factors causing mudslides in Guatemala?
A lot of Guatemalans have been cutting down trees for fire wood, which can be one of the causes to mudslides.
What is being done to help reduce mudslides and mudslide damage?
People have been planting pine trees on high slopes, which can help the risk of mudslides decrease. Women have also been able to bring in income for their families by selling things in markets, if they have more money they can rebuild their house if it is destroyed by a mudslide.

  • What is the vertical axis showing?  What are the units?  What is the total range shown?
  • The vertical axis is showing Temperature Anomaly, the units go up by twos, from negative six to positive six. The total rage is 12.
  • Can you tell from the picture's host page where the data came from?  If so, where?

Earth Science.

  • 1 - What do you think the global average temperature is?  This means the average for everywhere on Earth, day and night, for an entire year.  Explain why you answered what you did.
I think the global temperature is about 75 or 76 degrees. I think that because a lot of the Earth is warmer than what our temperatures are, and I was thinking that if you averaged all of the global temperatures together you would get something relatively close to 75 or 76 degrees.
  • 2 - People are often talking about "global warming."  How much do you think the average global temperature has increased in the past 100 years?  Do you think that this is a lot?
I think it has increased quite a bit because we have made more advances in technology, thus causing more manufacturing which causes more pollution. The more pollution you have the higher the temperature gets.
  • 3 - What do you think is the hottest the Earth has ever been? (since there has been an atmosphere?)  How about the coldest the Earth has ever been?  Explain why you answered what you did.
I think the hottest Earth has been is now because of all the pollution and the coldest is probably the Ice Age, because everything was frozen.
  • 4 - Are you concerned about "global warming?"  Why or why not?
I am because if the Earth gets so polluted that we can't do anything about it, we are done for, but we can still fix it if there is time, we just have to make sure we don't pollute as much as we do now. I think that if people realized how much of an effect global warming has on us they will be genuinely concerned about it, like I am.

Soil Erosion

If the amount of rainfall is high then I think it would be classified as a rain forest because they get a lot of rain which is good for supporting plant life. If the place doesn't get a lot of rain it would be come dry with a lot of grass like a grassland.
